The Athlete Health Survey

We don’t know enough about female athlete health. We are on a mission to change that.

From performance supplements to creating training equipment, we have not been considering the female body. In some cases, 99.5% of the research doesn’t even consider the menstrual cycle!

That’s why we’ve teamed up with Project Red-S to understand what athletes already know about their health and to uncover gaps in terms of knowledge or support.

To do this, we’ve created a survey to give athletes a voice, and highlight this issues we face. We hope to raise awareness with our survey campaign too!

Over the coming months, the team will be gathering anonymised data about athlete health, asking athletes of all ages, genders, abilities and ethnicities questions geared around menstrual cycles, eating habits and body image. Both organisations are passionate about amplifying the voices of their peers and aim to use the responses to create educational materials, social media campaigns and a full follow-up report complete with recommendations.

This survey is now closed. Thank you to those who took part. The findings will be released in Feb/March 2023

Kate Seary, Kyniska Advocacy:

“Far too often in the sports sector, the key voice missing in decision making processes is the athlete voice. We’re here to remedy that. We know that a success-at-all costs mentality means that athlete health is not a priority in the majority of sports in the UK. That has to change and we hope this survey and follow-up report will capture decision makers’ minds”

Pippa Woolven, Project RED-S:

“RED-S carries widespread and often life-changing health and performance consequences to athletes of any age, gender, ability or activity. Historically, it has been misunderstood, undiagnosed and untreated. We’re here to help push for change across all levels of sport.”
